Frequently Asked Questions 


1. Does the town pick up my trash?
Answer: If you are a resident of the Town, whether by rental, lease, or ownership the answer is yes. For more information, please go to our curbside recycling page.

If you are a business, the answer is no. For commercial entities, you may use the Riverside Recycling Facility at 910 Riverside Street in Portland. FMI, please call 797-6200 or you may use the Plan-It Transfer & Recycling Facility at 18 Gorham Industrail Parkway located on Route 25 in Gorham. FMI please call 854-5353.

2. My Trash/Recycle did not get picked up? What do I do?
Answer: Were your trash and recycling bins at the curb BEFORE 7:00am on your specified day? If not, please be sure to have everything out at the curb by 7:00am.

Was your trash in White Windham Trash Bags? If not, you can pick them up at many stores in Windham also at The Town Office or Public Works. Also if your recycling bin was left, check to be sure there isn't anything in the bin that should not be there. Please keep your Windham trash bags separated from the recycle bin. If your uncertain about what you can recycle call Public Works Department at 892-1909, we will be happy to assist you. 3. My trash and recyclables WERE out before 7:00am. Now what?
Answer: Then please call Public Works at 892-1909 so that they may arrange for your trash and/or recyclables to be picked up.

4. I have more recyclables than my Windham Recycles! bin can handle. What can I do?
You may use an additional bin! Any sturdy bin or box can be used, but it has to be approximately the same size as the Windham purple bin

i.e. laundry basket

5.How Much do the Windham Trash Bags Cost?
$12.50 for 10 of the 13 Gallon bags and $12.50 for 5 of the 30 Gallon bags.

This ensures that the Windham Recycles! Program continues to be funded by those that use it.

6. Does the town of Windham have a bulky waste disposal site?
Answer: The Town of Windham does not have a bulky waste site at this time. You may dispose of large items including leaves & brush at the following sites:

Plan-It Recycling & Transfer Inc., Located at 18 Gorham Industrial Parkway, (off of Route 25 in Gorham, ME) Open Monday thru Sat. 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Telephone (207) 854-5353

Riverside Recycling Facility. Located at 910 Riverside St. (Off Route 302 in Portland, ME) Open Monday thru Sat. 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Telephone (207) 797-6200

Casco Naples Transfer Station located at 425 Leach Hill Rd in Casco. (From Windham take Roosevelt Trail to Casco, take a right onto Rte 11 and a left onto Leach Hill Rd) Open 7:00 A.M. to 4:45 P.M. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday Telephone 207-627-7585

7. My road is in disrepair? Will you fix it?
Answer: That depends on a couple of factors. Is it a state or town road? Is the road private? Please call us at 892-1909 and let us know about the problem road.

8. There is a speed limit sign that is almost impossible to see because it's cracked and looks run-down. Can you do something about that?
Answer: Please call us at 892-1909 and let us know about the problem sign.

We are in the process of replacing much of the Town's signage with  advanced technology signs that will reflect much better at night and be more visible during the daytime.

9. The stripes on Route 302 are impossible to see. Will there be something done about that?
Answer: We have re-striped a portion of North Windham with a newer paint that is supposed to be brighter for a longer period of time.

10. My road has not been plowed yet, why?
Answer: We have 12 employees to plow and have and a sub-contractor that work tirelessly to make sure the roads and clear and ice-free. If you think we may have missed your road, please call us at 892-1909.

11. Is it true that I can get sand to use on my driveway for FREE?
Answer: YES! We allow you to pick up three (3) five gallon buckets of sand. That may not sound like a lot, but your back may not agree!

12. There is a dead animal on the road, could you please clean it up?
Answer: For animals, please call Jim Cook the animal Control Officer at 892-2525. For Deer or moose please call Public Works at 892-1909.
