MDOT RIVER ROAD REHABILITATION PLANS
On July 30th, representatives of the Maine Department of Transportation and its consulting engineers held the final public meeting on the project to rehabilitate the portion of River Road from Route 202 to Route 302. Below is a link to the presentation as given by the MDOT showing the plans for the project including the construction of a roundabout at the Windham Center Road intersection.

Click the links below to view/download video clips (.avi) of animations showing traffic simulations for different intersection treatments at River Road and Windham Center Road, including an unsignalized intersection, one with left turn lanes and a roundabout. The simulations are all based on recent traffic counts adjusted to peak hour volume projected for 2030 and are run at twice actual speed to make the traffic behavior easier to see.

The MDOT preliminary plans for the rehabilitation of River Road from Route 202 to Route 302 are now 70-90% complete. Each section of the project plan is named by the approximate start and end, though they extend a bit on each end. Please note:
-
Horizontal alignment is shown in the aerial photo at the top.
-
Vertical alignment, matching the horizontal above it, is exaggerated by a factor of five to more clearly see changes in road elevation.
-
More details, such as drainage, areas of possible easements, and right-of-way needs will be added to later plans.
The preliminary plan sections go from the 202 end (south) to the 302 end (north)
- Newhall to Covered Bridge
- Covered Bridge to Curtis
- Park to Sterling
- Windham Center to Easter
- Otter to Pottersville
The Maine Department of Transportation has included $6,000,000 for the rehabilitation of River Road from Route 202 to Route 302 in its Biennial Capital Work Plan for fiscal years 2012-2013. Construction could begin in the summer of 2013 with substantial completion in the fall of 2014 and possibly some final details, cleanup, etc. in early 2015.
MDOT has begun planning and engineering for the section of River Road from Route 202 to the Westbrook line but efforts to secure funding for construction continue.
