Leaf & Brush Facility Opening

Public Works will open the leaf & brush disposal area on April 6, 2012 at 7:00 AM and the facility will remain open until 4:00 PM April 30, 2012 at which time it will be closed until the fall.

A reminder that this program is for leaves & brush only. We ask that you separate your leaves from the brush in the appropriate area that is marked with signage. If you transport your leaves in bags, please remove them from the bags and take the bags with you. We cannot accept any brush larger than 12" in diameter.

SPRING SWEEPING

Public Works has been able to begin sweeping due to the good weather. We will be sweeping Rte 302, Rte 202, Rte 115 and Rte 35 corridors first, and will then go to the side roads.

MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to repair, maintain, and reconstruct the Town's infrastructure.This includes such responsibilities as drainage, replacing basins and culverts, paving, brush trimming and tree work, road side mowing, sweeping and sign maintenance. In the winter months we keep the roads clear of snow and ice by plowing, sanding salting, shelving, pushing snow back, and snow removal. 

We supervise the contracted collection of waste and recyclable services on a pay-as-you-throw basis through our Windham Recycles! program. We maintain the Municipal Fleet, Maintain Municipal Buildings and Grounds including all Cemeteries, and coordinate work with other departments in the Town as well as other numerous duties.

WINTER SAND
Winter sand is available at the Public Works facility on Windham Center Road. Residents may take two 5 gallon pails at a time. Please bring your own containers and shovel. You may get sand any time the gate is open.

TRASH AND RECYCLING HOLIDAY SCHEDULE FOR 2012
If your nomral trash pick-up day happens to fall on one of the following major holidays, it will be picked up on Friday of that week instead.

Independence Day July 4th will be collected on Friday July 7th
Thanksgiving Day November 22nd  will be collected on Friday November 23rd
Christmas Day December 25th will be collected on Friday December 28th
New Years Day January 1, 2013 will be collected on Friday January 4, 2013

CFL BULB RECYCLING
Home Depot has a national in-store consumer compact fluorescent light bulb recycling program at all 1,973 The Home Depot locations. There is no cost for the service.

Customers can bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs, and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. The bulbs will be managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance.

SILVER BULLET CONTAINERS
The Silver Bullets are open Monday through Friday from 7:00a.m. to 3:30p.m. at the Windham Public Works on 185 Windham Center Road

Windham Residents may bring cardboard (all boxes), paper, news papers,magazines, catalogs, phone books, file folders, gift boxes, wrapping paper, shopping bags, all books, junk mail, window envelopes, shoe boxes, cereal boxes aseptic milk and juice cartons, and paper board, plastics with the recycle symbol # 1-7, glass (any color glass), jars,foil,aluminum cans, and empty aerosol cans.

Please NO light bulbs, hypodermic needles or sharp objects, vinyl siding, bubble wrap, food, toys, food bags, potato chip bags, diapers, styrofoam packaging (packing peanuts) or trash.

BULKY WASTE ALTERNATIVES
For residents who need to dispose of Bulky Waste items you may take your large items to the following locations:

*Please note that these facilities do charge a fee for disposal. You may wish to call in advance to obtain the current rate information.

  • Riverside Recycling Center located on Riverside Street in Portland (turn left at the intersection of Riverside Street and Route 302)

  • Casco, Naples Transfer Station located on 425 Leach Hill Road in Casco (Take Roosevelt Trail to Casco, turn right onto Route 11 and left onto Leach Hill Rd)
